Synopsis

Here is the summary of the movie, in case you’re left in the dust, of the movie from IndieVest, “In this comedic fantasy adventure, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who’s just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). His concerned roommates (Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage) kidnap him to their LARP (Live Action Role Playing) gathering, where he enters a realm of fantasy escapism in which pretend knights, elves, and barbarians clash with foam weaponry on a mock battlefield. When Joe’s “sorcerer” roommate (Zahn) inadvertently summons a deadly succubus that takes Beth’s seductive form, bloody reality crashes down upon their fantasy world. Once LARPers start to turn up dead, the make-believe wizards and warriors must join forces with other adventurers (Summer Glau, Danny Pudi) to become the real life heroes they have been pretending to be and conquer the unleashed evil.”

Larping movie in Hall H!?

Joe Lynch was just as surprised as the rest of us that his larping movie, Knights of Badassdom, made it to Hall H, but I say, it’s about damn time! In true Larp fashion the panel starts with larpers, dressed up, and looking awesome. It set the stage for a great panel. However, what really kicked off the panel was Joe Lynch coming out onto the stage screaming “Hall H!”, “HALL H!”. It was incredible to see him excited and it felt as though he was just a fan that got to be on stage. Inspiring to say the least.

Larping movie, for larpers

One of our big problems with most larping related media is that it simply uses larping to make fun of a people group. With Knights of Badassdom, it’s exactly the opposite. At the beginning of the panel Joe talks about how the movie was made for “us”, the people at Comic Con. They took great pain to make sure to respect larping in general, but actual larpers specifically. Nothing will show that more than when we see some of the actual larpers in the movie. The movie was filmed in Spokane, Washington and had one of the chapters of the Larp Alliance come out to help in all the filming. It was inspiring, and I can’t wait to see all the larpers that were present for the entirety of filming. Real Larpers in the film is going to make the film. Period.

What will this do for larping?

Another theme reiterated throughout the panel, and asked during the Q&A period is how they hope this movie will make larping more accessible and popular for the “average person”. I couldn’t agree more. If Knights of Badassdom is as true to portrayal they are giving the movie, there will certainly be an upswing in the appearance of larping in the public’s eyes. In the very least, they will understand what it is. Which is more than has been able to be portrayed to this point. One of the way they hope this will be achieved is through the main character not being a larper until the beginning of the movie. You literally get to watch him go from too cool for larping skeptical guy to full on larping badass. And our hope is really the same as theirs, that if because of this movie just one more person picks up a foam sword, does battle and enters into a realm of fantasy, then it’s a complete win.
